Abstract: Multimodal biometric technology provides potential solutions for continuous user-todevice newlineauthentication in high security mobile ad hoc networks. Continuous user newlineauthentication is an important prevention-based approach to protect high security newlinemobile ad hoc networks (MANETs).Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are also newlineimportant in MANETs to effectively identify malicious activities. This study presents newlinea framework of combining authentication and intrusion detection in MANET. This newlinestudy presents three authentication methods to choose the optimal scheme of newlinecombining authentication and intrusion detection. The first method uses the dynamic newlineprogramming-based hidden Markov model scheduling algorithms to derive the newlineoptimal schemes. The second technique uses the Dumpster Shafer theory for data newlinefusion. The system decides whether user authentication (or IDS input) is required and newlinewhich biosensors (or IDSs) should be chosen, depending on the security posture. newlineThird technique presents structural results method to solve the problem for a large newlinenetwork with a variety of nodes. newlineMobile ad hoc networks are self-organizing, infrastructure-less, low power networks, newlinedesign to deploy bandwidth-shared radio channel communication and to work under newlinevulnerable environment. Security is primary concern in MANETs and in order to newlineachieve high security (confidentiality, integrity, authentication, availability and non newlinerepudiation), several techniques have been explored in which biometrics with newlinecryptography or intrusion detection has gained a momentum in recent years. This newlinestudy critically reviews and investigates the present biometric based security models newlineworks for MANETs, and along with security challenges and direction of further newlineresearch are proposed. newline newlineMobile AdhocNETworks (MANET) are collections of wireless mobile devices with newlinerestricted broadcast range and resources and communication is achieved by relaying newlinedata along appropriate routes that are dynamically discovered and maintained through newlinecollaboration between the nodes. MANET is a self-configuring, dynamic, multi hop newlineradio network without any fixed infrastructure. The main challenge in the design of newlinesuch networks is how to provide security for the information which is communicated newlinethrough the network. Biometrics provides possible solutions for this problem in newlineMANET since it has the direct connection with user identity and needs little user newlineIntrusion. newlineThis proposed Multimodal Biometric-based Authentication Combined Security newlineSystem provides authentication using face biometrics and security using fingerprint newlinebiometrics. The proposed system has three advantages compared to previous works. newlineFirst, for authentication, Eigen face of the sender is generated and is attached to the newlinedata to be transferred. Second, to enhance security, the data and the Eigen face of the newlinesender is encrypted by using the key which is extracted from the fingerprint biometric newlineof the receiver. Third, to reduce a transmission-based attack, the fingerprint based newlinecryptographic key is randomized by applying a genetic operator. Thus, this security newlinesystem provides authentication, security and revocability for high security applications newlinein mobile environments. newline newline
