Abstract: Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease of the skin and joints. Previous studies have shown a newlinehigher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in psoriatic patients. Recent literature newlineadds that non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is also frequent in patients with newlinepsoriasis. newlineAdiponectin is a cytokine secreted from the adipose tissue which has insulin- sensitizing newlineeffects and anti inflammatory properties. There are a few studies which have demonstrated newlinethat adiponectin is reduced in patients with psoriasis suggesting that this adipocytokine newlinemay play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. There have been no studies so far on newlineadiponectin in relation to psoriasis and MetS. Only one study has addressed adiponectin newlinereceptor expression in human keratinocytes. newlineObjectives: newlinePart 1A newlineTo investigate the occurrence of metabolic comorbidities and NAFLD in patients with newlinepsoriasis and controls and to determine the relation between severity of psoriasis and the newlinepresence of metabolic comorbidities. newlinePart 1B newlineTo assess the severity of NAFLD in both the groups. newlinePart 2A newlineThis study was performed to analyze serum adiponectin and insulin levels in psoriasis newlinepatients with and without MetS and in controls with and without MetS. newlinePart 2B newlineTo investigate if adiponectin receptors are expressed in human keratinocytes and to study newlinethe pattern of adiponectin receptor expression in keratinocytes of psoriatic patients with newlineand without MetS and correlate the serum adiponectin values with the receptor expression. newline8 newlineMaterials and methods: newlinePart 1A: newlineWe performed a case control study on 333 adult patients with psoriasis and 330 controls newlinematched for age, sex and body mass index. MetS was diagnosed by the presence of three newlineor more of the South Asian modified national cholesterol education program s adult panel newlineIII criteria. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography and liver enzymes after excluding newlineother liver diseases. newlinePart 1B: newlineWe compared the NAFLD subgroups in patients with psoriasis and controls by newlinedetermining their fibrosis , steatosis and non-alcoholic ste
