Abstract: | The present study focuses upon the preventive approach like Yoga for amelioration and timely management of Diabetes or Pre-diabetes. This study included those volunteers from the community who are at high risk for developing Diabetes. The detection of high-risk individuals was done on the basis of Indian Diabetes Risk Score (gt60) after door to door screening. The participants were divided into Control (N=34) and Diabetic Yoga Protocol (DYP) (N=68) group. The DYP group was specifically administered Diabetic Yoga Protocol (approved by Ministry of AYUSH) for prediabetics. The control group continued to follow their daily regime. The assessment for biochemical (HbA1c and Fasting blood glucose (FBG) anthropometrical (weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) neuropsychological parameters (sustained attention, perceived stress, state anxiety and general health), quality of life (QoL) and molecular markers (angiogenin, VEGF, BDNF, cortisol and leptin) was taken at baseline and after three months. Results: The result of the present study revealed that after three month of DYP practices, a significant improvement was seen in HbA1c (p=0.004), weight (plt=0.005), BMI (p=0.016), WC (p=0.019) and HC (p=0.024), state anxiety (p=0.001), general health (p=0.001), state anxiety (plt=0.001), and perceived stress (p=0.001), angiogenin (p=0.029) and VEGF (p=0.046), cortisol (p=0.024), and overall QoL (plt 0.001). However, no significant changes were seen after three month of DYP practice on FBG, waist to hip ratio, BDNF and leptin. Discussion: We showed that DYP regulated glycemic control, neuropsychological parameters, anthropometric parameters and overall QoL. Moreover, the three-month of DYP practices also showed improvement in neurogenesis and angiogenesis along with cortisol awakening response. Moreover, by understanding the risk status for the Diabetes, a person can adopt preventive measures like Yoga to delay the onset of Diabetes. |
