During the Rigvedic time this area was known as Sapt Sindhu which means a land of seven rivers.2 During Maharaja Ranjit Singh s time, the area was known as Lahore Suba or Lahore Province or the Kingdom of Lahore. In 1849, this area was occupied by the British, from 1849 to 1947 this region remained the part of the British Empire. This period is also known as British Period. During this period this area was called as the province of the Punjab. Under the British, Punjab included two types of territories, one belonging to the British Crown and the other was under the possession of Native Chiefs of the Punjab. Under the British crown, Punjab was divided into five divisions. Ambala Division, Jullundhur Division, Lahore Division, Multan Division and Rawalpindi Division.
