Abstract: The quality of casting of metals and alloys is determined by the newlinedesirability of its microstructure and the absence of defects which in turn newlinedepend on the process of solidification During the solidification process of newlinemetal casting an interfacial heat transfer resistance exists at the boundary newlinebetween the metal and the mould This resistance has a marked influence on newlinethe solidification rate of metal casting and is represented by the interfacial newlineheat transfer coefficient IHTC newlineThe present work deals with the determination of IHTC at the newlineMetal mould interface during the solidification of aluminum alloy castings newlinewith the sand mould The surface heat flux and the surface temperature of the newlinemould are estimated by two inverse heat conduction techniques namely newlinecontrol volume and Beck s approach for cylindrical and rectangular newlinegeometries The instantaneous cast and mould temperatures are measured newlineexperimentally and these values are used in the theoretical investigations newlineIn the control volume technique the surface heat flux and surface newlinetemperature are determined by applying the energy balance in each control newlinevolume of the inverse region In the Beck method solution algorithm is newlinedeveloped under the function specification procedure to solve the inverse heat newlineconduction equations In this approach the surface heat flux is estimated by newlinecorrecting the assumed value of the constant heat flux for few future time newlinesteps newline newline
