Abstract: Naturally occurringpolyketides and polypropionates have attracted a lot of attention during the past 50 years, and a great deal of research has concerneditself with their isolation, biological activity, biogenesis, and total synthesis. Muchis now known aboutbthese compounds from a biological perspective, including a detailed understanding of their biosynthesis, which gives rise to endless chemical diversity, and results in rich biological activity. Concurrent to the biological studies, organic chemists began showing interest in the synthesis of polypropionate natural products.Complex molecules like macrolide antibiotics with multiple stereocenters have received much attention due to their powerful biological activities. Stereocontrolled synthesis ofmacrolide and polyether antibiotics is one of the most attractive areas in current synthetic organic chemistry, and various new synthetic methodologies have been established through successful total syntheses of such complex compounds. The present invention provides methods and reagents relating to the PKS gene cluster for the polyketide antibiotics known as narbomycin and picromycin. Narbomycin is produced inStreptomycesnarbonensisand bothnarbomycin and picromycin are produced in S. venezuelae. newline
