Abstract: A BSTRACT newlineTitle: Iron Indices and Other Biochemical Parameters in relation to MELD Score and Child Pugh Score in patients With Chronic Liver Disease. newlineIntroduction: Chronic liver disease (CLD) is a disorder which involves progressive destruction of liver parenchyma leading to fibrosis and ultimately cirrhosis. Treatment modalities for CLD largely depend on the stage or severity of disease. For assessing the severity of liver disease, MELD score and Child Pugh scoring system are used. Serum Iron, Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and Ferritin along with Transferrin saturation are the important parameters for evaluating the iron abnormalities in respect to liver disease. The study was planned to evaluate the role of serum ferritin and other iron indices in relation to severity of disease. newlineMethods: Based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, three hundred patients diagnosed with Chronic liver disease with different etiology, age between 20 to 65 years, either gender, were enrolled in the study. Patients were grouped on the basis of etiology, CP score as classes A, B and C and MELD score as on different point basis. Iron indices and other biochemical parameters estimated in the above groups. newlineResult: The study observed a marked elevation of serum Iron with CP (P=0.059) and MELD score (P=0.050), Ferritin and transferrin saturation increases with CP score (P=lt0.001) and MELD score (P=lt0.001; P=0.059) whereas TIBC levels found to be decreased with the progression of liver disease with CP (P=0.010) and MELD score (P=0.016). Other routine biochemical parameters were also estimated in respect to CP and MELD score. Biochemical parameters which are used to assessing the severity of liver disease and iron indices were compared on the basis of ferritin levels and alcoholic basis. The association between the iron indices with CP score and MELD score was further evaluated by applying Spearman s correlation . newlineConclusion: Serum Iron indices have a strong association with progression of liver disease.
