Abstract: Vijay Dhondopant Tendulkar has remained one of the leading modern Indian newlinedramatists of international repute. Though he had little formal schooling, he was newlineacquainted with drama right from his childhood through his father and elder brother. newlineAfter taking up job of journalist he could witness the scenes of actual life. Such newlinelessons of real life moulded his sensibilities and life experiences. After the initial newlinefailure as playwright, his play Shrimantgave him space in the world of theatre. newlineWriting for Rangayan he established himself as a path breaking playwright. The newlineheydays of Tendulkarian era began with Shantata! Court Chalu Ahe (Silence! The newlineCourt is in Session). This play won him national repute. Plays like Gidhade (The newlineVultures- 1971) Sakharam Binder (1972) proved shocking for the conservative newlineMarathi theatre going audience and he became the centre of controversies. Ghashiram newlineKotwal reached him worldwide. All in all, thirty full length plays,number of One Act newlineplays and several other writings consist of Tendulkar s legacy. newlinePragmatics as a recent branch of linguistic investigation has taken the whole newlineworld by storm. It has opened new vistas of works correlating language in use and newlineliterature. newlineThe present research work has been aimed at understanding and analysing newlineTendulkar s dialogues in relation with H. P. Grice s theory of implicature in general newlineand conversational implicature in particular. Theory of Implicature focuses on How newlinemore gets communicated than what is said. This research has tried to investigate newlinethree most important plays of Tendulkar to establish instances of implicature as found newlinein the select pieces of dialogue. It also has tried to understand character s personality newlinethrough their language use. newlineChapter first entitled Introduction encompasses a short discussion of dramatic newlinecommunication. Then it discusses Pragmatics as a branch of Linguistics and some of newlinethe necessary notions in Pragmatics. It defines Pragmatics and talks about its nature newlineand scope.
