Abstract: | The human cerebrum comprises two hemispheres with diversified function. It is asymmetrical. Laterality means that though the two cerebral hemispheres are approximately uniform in feature they are not symmetrical in functions or structure. newlineAlmost 90% of the chosen population show a preference for right hand, where men as well as young persons showed somewhat lower incidences of right hand preference. The left out 10% of the population are left handed. Individuals who use their right hand maximal are called right handers and those who use their left hand mostly are called as left handers. Ambidextrous are those who use both their hands equally well, mostly all the time. Left handers had to undergo a lot of hardships in their day to day life. newlineThe techniques involved in the research of investigating the lateral preferences amid school going children comprise of practical tests to analyse motor, sensory and cognitive dissymmetries, and to determine handedness is the prime function of the intricate diagnostics test. Handedness is one of the greatly investigated phenomenon of asymmetry between the cerebral hemispheres. newlineThis study is focussed on the frequencies ,the distribution, and the association between the laterality of handedness, footedness, earedness, eyedness, conjugate lateral eye movement, arm folding, digital interlocking, foot overlapping, visual acuity, auditory acuity and also to correlate handedness the marker of laterality with Intelligence. To assess the handedness, Edinburgh handedness inventory was used and lateral preference inventory was used to assess the footedness, earedness and eyedness. Intelligence was assessed by Ravens Standard Progressive Matrices test. newlineThe present research observed that handedness is associated with the functional preferences namely handedness, footedness, earedness eyedness and also associated with the postural preferences namely arm folding, digital interlocking and foot overlapping. It is associated with CLEM and auditory acuity but shows no correlation for visual acuity. Left handers showed right cerebral dominance whereas the right handers showed left cerebral dominance in both the functional and postural preferences. Also it was observed that the intelligence level of the left handers were more compared to the intelligence level of the right handers based upon the RSPMT scores and the time of completion. newline newline newline |
