dc.description.abstract | The present study on The Nexus of Hearth, Heath and Heaven in the Selected Novels of Thomas Hardy , studies the bond between human beings, Nature and God. An overview of the Victorian era and the transition towards industrialisation, the role of religion, the major writers of the age and Hardy s place among them, his influences, the outline of his works along with a review of literature are given. The Novels of Character and Environment are taken for study. The Warmth of the Hearth studies the life of the rustics and the outsiders. Hardy s virtuous and rustic characters suffer and the vicious flourish - reflecting the conflict within Hardy himself. Through the portrayal of rustic characters, Hardy explores their relationship in the course of which the attributes of love, pain, suffering and death are brought out as they play a vital role in human life. Hardy s use of Biblical allusions, references and his idea of love and marriage bring out his deep knowledge of the Bible. newline In Harmony with the Heath studies Hardy s descriptions of the environment and the role of Nature in human life. Hardy traces not only the splendid but also the evil aspects of Nature. The rustics concern for Nature and Hardy s love and sympathy for animals are discussed. Nature displays love for humankind even when man remains indifferent at times. Faith, the Binding Cord with Heaven deals with man s quest for truth along with ideas like undeserved suffering, free will, pain, grace and love. The chapter explores Hardy s affinity to the Church and the novels conclude with realisation, repentance, reconciliation and restoration. newlineThe conclusion points out Hardy s religious position and his faith. Hardy is burdened with the wicked prospering and the virtuous suffering but this does not diminish or nullify his faith. His novels that end in restoration are evidence enough to say that Hardy s faith, though wavering, never died. Man s need to have a nexus with his fellow beings, Nature and ultimately with God through his faith is of immense | |
