The research work presents results and discussions to elucidate the matters of newlineperformance efficiency of an Upflow Hybrid Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UHASB) reactor for newlinethe treatment of municipal sewage and vegetable wastewater in tropical climates. The newlineresearch focuses on the main operational parameters (Hydraulic Retention Time-HRT, newlineinfluent COD concentration-CODinf, Organic Loading Rate-OLR) that affect the UHASB newlinereactor loading potentials and its performance in Steady State conditions, and the response newlineof the same when subjected to shock load conditions. newlineThe experimental investigation was performed using a lab-scale UHASB newlinereactor (56.52 L). The work was divided into three phases: Phase 1, the reactor was operated newlinewith different HRTs (HRT = 20h to 2h) and influent COD concentrations at adapted OLR newlinearound 3 kgCOD/d.m3. Phase 2, the reactor was operated with the influent COD newlineconcentrations at 1800, 800 and 300 mg/l and at different Hydraulic Retention Times (HRT newline= 8, 6, 4, 2 hours). Phase 3, the reactor was operated at a constant HRT of 8 hours and same newlineinfluent COD concentrations around 800 mg/l. newlineIn the first experimental part of the research, data was collected in order to evaluate newlinethe Steady State performance and effectiveness of the UHASB reactor on the basis of COD newlineremoval efficiency, effluent variability and pH stability. In the second part of the newlineexperimental research, the efficiency and stability of the system to withstand hydraulic and newlineorganic shock loads were evaluated. Four indicators were defined for that purpose: COD newlineremoval efficiency, effluent variability, pH stability and recovery time. After the shock load newlinestudy was conducted, the sludge of the reactor was tested as the third part of experimental newlineresearch in terms of settleability and expansibility to decide the amount of sludge that may get newlineexpelled in case of sudden, unexpected hydraulic shock loads. newlineUnder Steady State conditions UHASB reactor can treat sewage with COD as low newlineas 295 mg/l and HRT as low as 2 h, but the maximum removal effic
