Abstract: Sustained and methodical working over many years has fruitified in the form of this newlinethesis. This study has been able to fulfill its all major projected objectives. The regional extent of newlinearsenic (As) contamination in parts of Chhattisgarh state was the first major objective of the newlinethesis, followed by the search for a suitable treatment technology. For that in depths study on the newlineaspects of groundwater contamination and the development of method to deal with such problem newlinewas carried out. The major aspects of contamination focused in the work are arsenic and acid newlinemine drainage. Arsenic contamination was studied in great detail, where the status of arsenic newlinecontamination in the block of Ambagarh Chowki is presented. The results were compared with newlinethe ten year old situation of the same area. newlineFurther the work was dedicated to study the development of a Permeable Reactive Barrier newline(PRB) strategy to deal with groundwater acidity and consequent arsenic and other toxic metallic newlineproblem. Acidity generation is known to cause arsenic problem. Hence the control of newlinegroundwater acidity is a key to avoid arsenic problem. The behavior of PRB in actual working newlineconditions was also modeled in this work. newlineGroundwater contamination and the complicated environmental aspects are always newlinechallenging and interesting. By this reckoning the information generated in this thesis will be newlinevery useful for world scientific community. If the solid wastes generated from Indian steel newlineindustries could be used as low-cost adsorbents in PRB, they will provide a double advantage for newlineenvironmental pollution control. Firstly, it will overcome the waste materials disposal problem newlineand secondly, the low-cost adsorbent, will reduce the pollution of water impacted by arsenic and newlineother trace metallic contaminated acidic mine drainage. newlineThe work presented in this thesis is divided in three parts and are summarized as below- newline1: Aspects of Groundwater Contamination in Chhattisgarh newlineThis work reports the present status of ground water arsenic contamination in various newlinevil
