dc.description.abstractAnionic surfactants are used worldwide in detergent and household cleaning products. Due to their extensive use, surfactants can find their way into water bodies. This study selected SDS as model anionic surfactant due to their widespread use. Most of the published research studies have focused on the industrial application of the anionic surfactants. The aim of this study is to assess the presence of anionic surfactants in various water bodies of Durg Bhilai region of the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. All pond, river and sewage water were found to be contaminated with SDS. In the present study a novel attempt is made to understand the behavior of AS in various water bodies and to predict the environment concentration of AS. newlineA quick, simple rapid and reliable method was developed for the determination of anionic surfactant. An ion association complex is formed between an anionic surfactant and a cationic dye, Crystal violet (CV). The blue colored complex can be easily extracted in benzene. The colored organic layer can be used for a yes/no type measurement of AS. The mole ratio of [SDS] - [CV]+ complex was determined by the curve fitting method. The value of molar absorptive of [SDS] - [CV]+ complex lies in the range of (2.2 3.48 ) x104 l mol-1 cm-1 at absorption maximum and#61548; max.at 565 nm . newlineThe wide application of surfactants in various industries and everyday life leads to their appearance in waste water and evokes intensive pollution of water reservoirs .As it is impossible to entirely hamper the surfactant penetration into water reservoirs, it is necessary to limit their content in water. This requires simple and reliable methods for removal of the surfactant concentration. Surfactant removals are time consuming and expensive procedures. Thus, the problem of elaborating simple and fast methods of surfactant detection and removal is rather acute.
