Abstract: | Fractal image compression is a promising lossy compression technique. The newlineapplication of fractal image compression varies from social media to industries with newlineenormous database comprise of images. Encoding time is the performance measure and newlinesignificant concern of fractal image compression algorithm. Large domain pool is newlineexhaustively searched to find an appropriate matching block. A large number of MSE newlinecomputation leads to delay in the encoding process. Large pool and exhaustive search affect newlinethe performance of the FIC algorithm. Many researchers have proposed techniques to newlineimprove the fidelity criteria. In this work, a comprehensive survey of various approaches newlineto accelerate the compression process with their strength and weakness is presented. The newlinechapter also briefly discusses the theoretical framework of fractal compression along with newlinethe factors affecting the process. The study investigates 14 broadly coordinated approaches. newlineEvery approach deliberated chronologically for the superior understanding of the newlinedevelopment of FIC. Reviewed literature is summarized and explored for a quick review. newlineThe underlying objective of this chapter is to recognize the methods that allow the expansion newlineof new strategies to speed up the encoding procedure. newlineImage encoding using a fractal approach can be done using search-less or newlineexhaustive search paradigms. This study exercises both the approaches in the frequency newlinedomain to improve the performance of compression. Further, we have proposed to use the newlineadaptive technique to address difficulty occurred due to the large search space. newline |
