dc.description.abstractIndian English drama suffered in the beginning due to foreign language. newlineEnglish language was not accessible for the Indian masses. They were accustomed to newlinewitness the plays performed in the regional languages and very few playwright came newlineforward to write in English language. In the beginning, Indian English plays were newlinewritten Elizabethan or Victorian style of writing. The playwrights did not consider the newlinenative themes in their writing therefore their plays did not become popular. The newlinecondition of the Indian drama was changed in 60s and afterwards. The major newlinecontributors to the development of Indian English drama are Vijay Tendulkar, Badal newlineSircar, Girish Karnad, Mohan Rakesh, Mahesh Dattani and many more. Mahesh newlineDattani among these playwrights deals with multi-dimensional themes. He has newlinefocused on the issues such as gender, sex, religion, communal tension, feminine newlineidentity, homosexuality, marriage, and above all, gay and lesbian relationship. newlineMahesh Dattani is one of the popular playwrights in the contemporary India. newlineHe is a renowned media personality. He is an adept practitioner of the performing art. newlineHe is an actor, director, screenplay-writer and a high profile cultural administrator.
