Abstract: | Today s optical networks signify high capacity telecommunication networks that are based newlineon optical technologies and optical components to provide capacity, routing, grooming or newlinerestoration at wavelength level. Optical networks, as backbone of telecom networks, are newlinealso major contributor in the overall power consumption. As optical networks are high newlinecapacity networks, hence any loss of data due to network failure can incur huge losses. newlineTherefore, survivability is the most basic requirement of optical networks. p-Cycles (PreConfigured Cycles) are one of the most promising technique for shared protection. In order newlineto meet this high reliability requirement, network architectures are deployed with a large newlinenumber of redundant resources taking into account the backup capacity for protection. newlineThese redundant resources are also major contributor to overall power consumption. There newlineis an urgent need to consider minimizing power consumption of optical networks and newlineassuring survivability of network at the same time. newlineThe focus of the present work is to find algorithms, mathematical models and heuristics to newlineestablish working paths and provide restoration with optimum power consumption and newlinespare resources for an optical network. newlineShortest Path Routing (SPR) is one of the popular methods used to find the path between newlinetwo nodes to transfer the data with minimum cost. In the present thesis another method newlinesimilar to SPR has been developed to find the path for transfer of data between two nodes newlinewith less power consumption i.e. Power Conscious Routing (PCR).In optical networks, the newlinecapacity or the wavelengths are available in abundance; therefore, the objective of this newlinealgorithm is to minimize the total power consumption by network components, which are in newlineON/ACTIVE state. It helps in reduction of power consumption by keeping the idle network newlinecomponents in SLEEP/OFF state during low traffic conditions. The impact of power newlineconscious routing and power efficiency technique (putting devices in sleep mode) on newlinenetworks with p-Cycle protect |
