Luna as poetic drama

Abstract

newlineThe thesis entitled Luna: As Poetic Drama is completely original research work in the field of Punjabi Poetic Drama. The scholars and the critics had been referring to this composition differently such as an Epic, a Khand-Kav, a Dramatic Poem and a Poetic Drama. But this composition does not conform to the parameters of an Epic, a Khand-kav and a Dramatic Poem. This work of art is basically in the framework of drama. The division of this work into different acts, the information about the characters and situations in the beginning or the end of different acts by the author and the beginning of this art form through the dialogues between the Nati and the Sutradhar is an ample proof of its being a Poetic Drama. But in its present form Luna displays certain shortcomings that hamper it from becoming a perfect Poetic Drama. The author instead of developing the plot indulges in the expansion of the situations such as are found in the epic form and the dialogues become exceptionally long. Instead of the harmony of poetic and dramatic elements, the poetic elements become dominant in this composition. Yet this work of art displays certain qualities that go on to establish it as a Poetic Drama. It can be staged successfully by any talented director after making some necessary changes.
