Abstract: Over the past three decades membrane processes have been newlineadopted to perform a variety of separation operations by different industries newlineThe efficiency as well as the economics of the various industrial processes newlinecan be greatly improved if the membrane processes are suitably integrated in newlinethe existing process The membranes are to be tailor made to suit the specific newlinerequirements However the membrane prepared with the single polymer newlinecannot fulfill the above requirements of combination of various properties newlineMoreover developing new polymer for the specific application would hit on newlinethe economics of the membrane preparation Hence a more versatile way of newlineblending two or more polymer was used in the present investigation newlineThe thesis deals a brief historical aspect of membranes types of newlinemembrane separation processes, preparation techniques survey of literature newlineof membranes fouling and the market trend of the ultrafiltration membranes newlineIn this thesis the blending technique was used to improve the newlinefunctional properties of the membrane PVDF was chosen as the base polymer newlinedue to its excellent resistance to chemical and exceptional hydrolytic stability newlinePolystyrene PS and polyvinylbutyral PVB was blended individually with newlinePVDF to improve the characteristic and performance of the membrane The newlineblends were prepared with dimethylacetamide DMAC as solvent and newlinepolyvinylpyrrolidone PVP as pore forming additive newline newline
