dc.description.abstract | In chemical engineering processes such as distillation and newlineAbsorption knowledge about the electrolyte s influence on the phase newlineequilibrium is of significant importance Distillation offers the most newlineeconomical means of separating the liquid component and in the case of newlineextractive distillation inorganic salts used as extractive agents tend to modify newlinethe relative volatility of binary mixtures aided by the formation of associated newlinecomplexes or clusters of molecules of the volatile component around the salt newlineions The salt effect is also believed to be a complex function of salt solvent newlineinteraction and self interaction among the system components newlineAs is generally known the thermodynamic properties of binary newlinesolvent mixtures are sensitive to various associations of equilibrium These newlineexcess properties of binary liquid mixtures are important to understand and newlineinterpret the nature of interaction between molecules of mixtures In newlinedistillation processes one has to be aware of the influence of the electrolyte newlinesolutions as they can generate unwanted by products which demand further newlinetreatment Regarding azeotropic mixtures their phase equilibrium changes newlinecan be used to design more effective and economical distillation operations newlinebecause the azeotrope can be shifted or can even be broken by using salt as an newlineextractive agent Since there is an interrelation between the excess free energy newlineand the excess enthalpy of liquid mixtures the above studies using newlinethermodynamic models were quite useful in understanding the interaction of newlinemolecules within the selected liquid mixture and to predict the phase newlineequilibrium of liquid mixtures under the influence of added salts newline newline | en_US |
