Abstract

Groundwater plays a vital role in the world water resources In the 21st century the demand of groundwater is of paramount important and in recent decades the groundwater exploitation has increased greatly particularly for domestic industrial and agricultural purposes It is estimated that approximately one third of the worlds population use ground water for domestic purposes Increased urbanization and industrialization increased the groundwater demand Groundwater quality may be affected by natural factors such as geology and geochemical process Groundwater resources quality and quantity are also influenced by surface water bodies such as tanks rivers and channels Large amount of rain water is stored in tanks and these tanks are most important structures in water resources system In the Indian state of Tamil Nadu one third of irrigation is carried out with tank water Therefore both the quality and quantity of the water is important But in recent decades tank irrigation in Tamil Nadu decreases due to frequent failure of monsoon and inadequate water management practices Since tank influences both the quantity and quality of groundwater it is important to understand the interaction between tank and groundwater Several research works have been done on interaction between groundwater and surface water by using methods such as geochemical geophysical isotopes and water balance distinctly newline
