Abstract: Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, remains a serious global health threat, highlighting the urgent need for novel antituberculosis drugs. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report 2009, over 9 million new cases of TB occur each year, resulting in approximately 2 million deaths. The 2014 WHO report also states that the problem of drug-resistant tuberculosis is worsening, with an estimated 480000 new cases of multi-drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in 2013. The shikimate pathway is responsible for the biosynthesis of the aromatic amino acids and other aromatic metabolites in plants, microorganisms and apicomplexan parasites. The shikimate pathway is essential in bacteria and plants, but absent in mammals, which has led to the interest in the enzymes of this pathway as targets for design of antimicrobial and herbicidal agents newline
