Abstract: Rapid urbanization along with the development of large scale industries has created numerous environmental problems With the reduction of buildable ground the construction sector has to move to areas with clay soil for expansion which require soil stabilization Any construction work over subgrade clay soil is expensive since treatment with various admixtures is required Civil engineers structural engineers architects and builders have tried many ways to avoid the damaging effects of expansive soils Most of the methods they tried were based on trial and error approaches Previously they relied on mechanical stabilizers later on they realized the necessity of understanding the behaviour of expansive soil Proper understanding of the behaviour of natural materials secondary materials and soil stabilization are essential before implementing any design method Thus the emphasis is on the proper understanding of the physical and chemical and engineering properties of expansive soils to improve and stabilize them Tonnes of waste generated by industries are disposed and waste management has become an area of concern The efforts made by researchers include developing cheaper admixtures from industrial wastes lik fly ash FA rice husk ash quarry dust QD marble powder MP furnace slag etc as substitutes for soil-improving additives like lime and cement kiln dust newline
