Abstract: | Vattamalaikarai river basin in tamil nadu india is witnessing a remarkable change in groundwater level fluctuation and deterioration of groundwater quality it is situated between the latitudes100 53n 110 01n and the longitudes 77 15 e 77 45 e with geographical area of 435km2 vattamalaikarai river is a non perennial one which drains towards east and confluences with the amaravati river according to the topographical studies the maximum elevation of the basin is 427 m above mean sea level which is observed in the western part of the basin as the study area falls under the rain shadow region of western ghats the average annual rainfall of the basin is only 571 mm major types of soil present in the study area are black cotton soil red soil and calcareous soil geologically the study area comprises of hornblende biotite gneiss and charnockite with granite and syenite intrusions as the vattamalaikarai basin mainly depends on the groundwater resources it is essential to assess the groundwater potential and quality variation it is also essential to understand the impact of land use land cover changes on groundwater system the groundwater quality variation in this region is mainly due to geogenic reasons newline |
