Abstract: | Cholesterol is an essential lipid component of mammalian cell membrane and life is highly impossible without It Though half of the composition of cell membrane omprises cholesterol due to its small size and less weight it accounts only for 20 of the mass. It is also present inside the cells i e in organelle membranes The mitochondrion has only 3 of cholesterol by mass but the endoplasmic reticulum has 6 of cholesterol by mass Cholesterol plays three major roles in humans namely maintenance of cell membranes, secretion of hormones and production of bile acids Although it has these beneficial roles it creates life threatening issues to the human being when its level overshoots or falls short of certain limit The exceeded cholesterol level leads to coronary heart disease and brain stroke by its deposition arteriosclerosis inside the walls of arteries The low cholesterol leads to the serious issues which include suicides and homicides Hence the cholesterol is a major cause for mortality and has to be monitored and controlled constantly Till date various analytical measurements are being done to estimate the level of cholesterol in blood To overcome the drawbacks in those methods biosensor platform was established by the researchers. The sensor electrode was successfully demonstrated for the detection of biomolecules six decades ago The electrode ossesses biologically sensing elements and suitable transducer for signal onversion. newline |
