dc.description.abstractIn recent times, the use of digital images has become increasingly popular in the fields of medicine, scientific experimentation, education etc. Hospitals and Medical colleges create large numbers of digital images such as X-ray, Mammogram and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as part of their daily routine. Interpreting medical images is certainly a complex task that requires extensive knowledge. Image retrieval is a key requirement for these domains. Researchers have introduced several methods for processing image databases. Techniques for this include; Sorting, searching, browsing and retrieving images. The conventional image retrieval schemes define the image with text, then uses text information to retrieve images from a text-based database management system. This method has lot of demerits; it utilizes keywords connected with images to retrieve visual information. It is very tedious and time consuming. To solve this problem, Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system is introduced. The CBIR system automatically retrieves the required images from medical image databases by extracting the visual content of the features. However, the efficiency of image retrieval systems is challenging issue.
