Abstract: | Mobile data traffic from smartphones is expected to consume around 93% of newlinethe total data traffic by the year 2022. Of the mobile data traffic, 79% will be consumed newlineby videos. It is also predicted that, 59% of the mobile data traffic arising due to cellular newlineapplications will be switched over to Wi-Fi or small cell networks. This demonstrates newlinethe significance of small cell networks which are expected to play a larger role in 5G newlinenetworks. Another promising area which is envisaged to provide promising solutions newlineto the impending challenges of 5G is microwave photonics. Microwave photonics newlinerefers to the integration of microwaves and photonics and has been an attractive area newlineof research over the last few years. In spite of the successful research and development, newlinemicrowave photonics did not come to limelight even though the technology was newlineinitially conceived, maybe it was just awaiting the introduction of a novel and distinct newlineapplication like 5G to come into limelight. Millimeter waves are considered to be the newlinepreferred carriers for communication in small cell networks in a 5G environment. This newlineimportance of millimeter wave signals has motivated the researchers to investigate various newlinetechniques of generating millimeter wave signals. Photonics based techniques for newlinegenerating millimeter wave signals have dominated the research literature over the last newlinefew years due to the various advantages offered by it newline |
