Abstract: At present, work on the 1200 kV transmission system is in progress in India. Research newlinework is going on at National Test Station Bina, where 1200 kV set up with a singlecircuit newlineand double-circuit line is installed. In order to investigate the performance of newlineany ultra-high voltage (UHV) system, the design modifications and other technical newlinestudies related to the transmission system, its simulation study is required. This Thesis newlinepresents the modeling and simulation and validation of 1200 kV UHV autotransformer newlineusing PSCAD 4.6 models. The simulation results are validated and verified through newlinethe actual field test results. newlineThe work also focuses on the design and evaluation of a TCSC system for the Indian newlineUHVAC system for its Wardha-Aurangabad transmission line, which is designed to newlineoperate at 400 kV but will be upgraded soon to 1200 kV. A flow chart is prepared for newlinethe determination of the values of TCSC inductor and capacitor. PSCAD/ EMTDC newlineSoftware-Simulation based study is carried out to analyze the behavior of UHV newlinetransmission line with TCSC. The effect of improvement in power transfer capability, newlinewith and without use of the TCSC scheme; through Constant- Current mode, closed newlineloop control; has been investigated for a healthy line and a faulty line. newlineFurther, a novel technique for reactive power management of the Ultra High Voltage newline(UHV) lines having voltage level of 1200 kV line and above is suggested. The UHV newlinepower grid has to frequently face the problems associated with the power- frequency newlineand switching over-voltages. The technique involves the use of three-phase UHV newlineTransformers as a controlled shunt reactor (CSR) in combination with the use of fixed newlinereactor. The performance of the UHV AC transmission line is studied using PSCAD newlinesoftware and working of CSR is evaluated. Wardha-Aurangabad 1200 kV newlinetransmission line in India is considered for the simulation model. The use of CSR is newlinefound to be effective in mitigating system problems. newlineA questionnaire is developed to ascertain the scope of cost- optimization of an newlineaut
