Abstract: | Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) is widely used in the transmission and distribution of AC networks to improve the power transmission capability and controllability of the network. Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (DSTATCOM), a member of the FACTS family is widely used as a reactive power shunt compensation device in the Transmission and Distribution system. DSTATCOM is an advanced power semiconductor device and it provides smooth capacitive and inductive reactive power supplies to improve transient stability. It also suppresses flicker, minimizes line losses and damps power oscillations. DSTATCOM generates and absorbs the reactive power in the grid which depends upon the variations in distribution of load. This can result in voltage collapse or depression. DSTATCOM supports the stability of the grid by continuously providing reactive power to the grid. It operates by combining the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) switching in milliseconds. Nowadays, DSTATCOMS are upgraded with Gate Commutated Thyristor (GCT), a self-commutated device with ratings up to 6 kV. DSTATCOM installation in a suitable grid point will enhance the power transfer capability with a smooth voltage profile under different network conditions. Active filtering by DSTATCOM will help to improve power quality newline |
