Abstract: Polyscias has 117 accepted species distributed in tropical and temperate regions. newlineSeven Polyscias species and their cultivars are distributed throughout India. newlineChemical profiles and biological activities of essential oils of Polyscias species are newlineleast investigated. This study provides the chemical profiles of 5 Polyscias species newline(Polyscias filicifolia, P. scutellaria, P. fruticosa, P. guilfoylei, Polyscias sp.) and 3 newlineof its cultivars (P. balfouriana Dinnerplate , P. balfouriana Marginata , P. newlinebalfouriana Pennockii ) from south India. Major individual constituents in newlinePolyscias leaf oils were, P. filicifolia (Germacrene D (48.84%), !-Elemene (9.22%), newlinequot-Selinene (5.91%), 7-epi-quot-Selinene (5.43%)), P. scutellaria (!-Elemene newline(18.71%), (Z)-Falcarinol (15.53%), quot-Selinene (12.73%), 7-epi-quot-Selinene (9.38%), newlineAristolochene (7.55%)), P. fruticosa (cis-Cadina-1,4-diene (34.61%), Germacrene newlineD (28.01%), 7-epi-quot-Selinene (16.08%), (Z)-Falcarinol (7.61%)), P. guilfoylei (!- newlineSelinene (49.59%), quot-Selinene (21.68%), (Z)-Falcarinol (11.65%)), Polyscias sp. newline((Z)-Falcarinol (47.99%), cis-14-nor-Muurol-5-en-4-one (18.26%), quot-Bulnesene newline(9.22%)), P. balfouriana Dinnerplate (E-!-Farnesene (60.31%), #-Cadinene newline(23.60%)), P. balfouriana Marginata ((E)-!-Farnesene (53.33%), #-Cadinene newline(16.91%), (Z)-Falcarinol (7.88%)) and P. balfouriana Pennockii ((E)-!-Farnesene newline(60.41%), #-Cadinene (23.71%)). Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (SH, 73.12%- newline94.74%) dominated the chemical profiles of seven Polyscias leaf oils. Oxygenated newlinesesquiterpenes (OS) in these leaf oils were 0.96%-9.35%. In Polyscias sp., OT newline(Others) content was 50.40% with 47.99% of (Z)-Falcarinol. The other major newlinegroups of constituents in Polyscias sp. were OS (27.03%) followed by SH newline(16.44%). Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, the major constituents in most Polyscias newlinespecies/cultivars, are known for their biological activities and ecological newlinesignificance.Various Reactive Oxygen Species are formed in cellular systemsContinued
