Abstract: The primary driving force for exhaustive research in fiber-less optical communication is the demand of high bandwidth required for the next generation (5G) cellular backhaul networks and new emerging applications. The intent for the study of the terrestrial free-space optical communication (FSOC) system is to utilize its capability to provide the broadband access network to the workplaces in the midst of the obstacles. The work outlined in the thesis aims to achieve this objective by deploying optical reflectors in outdoor FSOC systems. Additionally, the subject of the thesis is to (a) track turbulence-induced optical beam fluctuations, (b) estimate the optical turbulence level without the knowledge of the transmitted power, and (c) formulate the transition in scintillation level over short and long periods of on-off keying (OOK) based FSOC link operation in line-of-sight obstructed scenarios. newlineIn correspondence to the research targets, this dissertation has presented an analytical model of the reflector-assisted FSOC system to establish an outdoor communication link. The experimental results indicate that the received signal-to-noise ratio and the noise margin levels of the underlying communication links are significantly higher whenever a concave mirror is incorporated as a reflector node newline
