Abstract: Over the past few decades, Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of multi area interconnected power systems has been an interesting and active area of research which is an essential part for the operation of the power system to be safe. The performance of the interconnected power system depends on various issues like; artificial/evolutionary techniques, structure of incorporated controller and selection of appropriate objective function. Various researches on implementing evolutionary techniques in multi area interconnected power systems using different performance indices as objective function along with different structure of controllers have already been reported in order to enhance the dynamic, transient performance and robustness of multi area interconnected power systems. newlineThe present research work deals with evolution of hybrid Grey Wolf Optimization-Pattern Search (hGWO-PS) algorithm in Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of multi area interconnected power systems in order to improve the performance. Here, Two Degree of Freedom-Proportional Integral Derivative (2DOF-PID) controller has been incorporated in AGC of considered multi area interconnected power systems. The determination of unknown parameters of 2DOF-PID controllers have been obtained by hGWO-PS algorithm with Integral of Time multiplied Absolute Error (ITAE) as an objective function for the pre-defined constrained optimization problem. The approach to determine and optimize the parameters of 2DOF-PID controllers in multi area AGC has been abbreviated as hGWO-PS/2DOF-PID (proposed approach) throughout the present work. newlineFirstly, the proposed approach; hGWO-PS/2DOF-PID has been employed in standard two area interconnected non reheat thermal-thermal power system without nonlinearities and the superiority of the proposed approach has been established by comparing the results with some recently published approaches in the literature. newline
