Abstract: newlineIncreasing energy demand and depleting conventional fuel reserves has been a keen point of interest since oil crisis faced in late 1970. Major part of energy demand meet by fossil fuel based power station. That is associated with economic constraints like increasing energy cost; and environmental concerns such that global warming, greenhouse gas emissions and flue gases. On the contrary, nonconventional sources have exhibited complimentary characteristics like reduction of overall energy cost and ecofriendly in nature. Therefore depleting fossil fuel reserves need to be replaced by alternate economic and environment friendly power generation sources. A lot of work has been reported so far by researchers towards rationalizing use of conventional and non-conventional energy resources to meet the ever increasing energy demand. The available renewable energy sources like mini/micro hydro, wind, solar, geothermal have not yet been fully explored and exploited. These sources can be used in grid-connected as well as off-grid mode. Wind energy and small hydro sources are locally available a lot and their utilization is quite capable to accomplish the future energy requirements. Harnessing electrical power from wind energy and mini-hydro power plants are area of research interest in present energy scenario. Technical as well as economic considerations need to be made in order to assure cost-effective utilization of these energy resources for quality and reliable power supply. Electrification of rural and remote grid connected locations is a challenging task due to technical limitations like low electric load demands, theft, prone to faults, low energy tariff and huge investment involved in extensions of grid. All these problems can be shorted out by decentralized generation; as such locations are rich in locally available energy resources like wind and small hydro-heads.
