Abstract: | The need for optical computing and processing evolved from the fact that the newlineconventional computing systems are based on electronic components. These are newlinerestricted by the response time and thereby, operation speed; as the speed of electron newlineis only 1/10th of the photon. The electronic based components result in high power newlineconsumption and heat dissipation. All these facts led to the development of optical newlinebased computing systems. newlineAn optical computer performs computation with photons when compared with newlineconventional electron-based computation. Light pulses are used to transmit the data newlineinstead of voltage packets. There are basically two types of optical computers, electrooptical newlinehybrid computer and all-optical computer. In the hybrid computer the data is newlinechanged from binary code to light pulses using lasers. After processing, the newlineinformation is then detected and decoded electronically back into binary.
