Abstract: | English has become the predominant language for communication globally. It newlineis the language of science and technology, higher education, tourism and travel, newlinebusiness and commerce all over the world. In the era of globalization, English newlinelanguage is predominating across different sectors and India is no exception in that. In newlineIndian context, English language still stands to examine students in the universities, newlineconduct foreign affairs, and transacts business with the world outside; the desire to newlinelearn English is increasing every day in numbers. Proficiency of English along with newlinegood speaking skills not only gets employment in the global business world but also newlinebrings a lot of opportunities for self-employment. newlineThis study focuses on the strategies of developing speaking skills among the newlinetertiary level students in India and the practice of speaking skills teaching in newlineclassroom. The importance of speaking English for good communication is newlineunquestionable. In the case of tertiary level students, they are expected to be industryready newlineas they graduate but in most cases, their speaking proficiency level is quite newlinepoor. It has been seen that many of them who joined for their undergraduate courses newline(engineering students here in the study) are poor at speaking skills and its importance newlineis given less in the course of teaching and learning in classroom. English in colleges is newlinetaught as a syllabus-oriented- the concerned teacher usually rushes to complete the newlinesyllabus and the students would just write in exam to earn grades. So this research newlineaims to develop speaking skills for the tertiary learners by teaching them with some newlineinnovative methods. The sample taken for the study was 1st year engineering newlineundergraduate students of 250. newline |
