Abstract: The electric locomotive systems are widely used in traction because of many advantages such as high accuracy quick responsiveness and higher reliability The main types of traction system include Direct Current DC Alternating Current AC and composite system The AC traction systems require the bulky transformers and the frequency converters The DC system leads with many advantages such as reduced energy consumption, space and weight rapid acceleration and braking of DC motors The DC series motor is widely used in the traction system due to high starting torque and ease speed control The equipment in the DC traction system is less costly because of the absence of bulky transformers lighter and more efficient than an AC traction system The availability cost effectiveness of the wind energy is utilisedas a power source for traction applications The modern technological developments have made wide drastic improvements to the efficiency of windmills which are now extensively used for electricity generation The rectifiers serving as power conversion device in the power section of the traction system behave like a non-linear load to electric power distribution system and introduce numerous adverse impacts on the power systems which inturn affects the quality of the power supplied to the traction system leading to higher power losses higher operating costs and less power system efficiency Hence Power Quality PQ improvement is necessary for an energy efficient traction purpose which has initiated intensive research in traction system and more precisely in the area of the rectifiers to provide low harmonic distortion in the input currents. newline
