Studies on alkyloxy azo and azomethine cinnamate based thermotropic liquid crystals

Abstract

This dissertation is comprises of synthesis and characterization of three series of structurally alkyloxycinnamate based rod like liquid crystal compounds These three series of comprises twenty nine different compounds each series is differentiated by linking group terminal alkyloxy chain and different terminal substituent Accordingly first series contains twelve compounds were designed as various substituents substituent alkyloxy chain and aromatic ring to find the effect of substituent on the mesophase The second series designed as first series but differ in ester group linking group instead of azo group containing rod-shape mesogen with same structural unit The third series contain five compounds reported which are consisting of azobenzene containing different terminal substituent of alkyloxycinnamate mesogens These compounds are studied linearity introduced in the rod shaped of molecules using ester and azo linking groups but with same dodecyloxy terminal chains n 12 newline
