Cermets possess the hardness of ceramics cer and the toughness of metals met They consist of equiaxed ceramic grains 15 85 vol dispersed in a binder or alloy metal matrix Titanium carbo nitride TiCN cermets are replacing tungsten carbide Cobalt WC Co ceramics now a days Their enhanced performance at high temperatures favours high speed machining with prolonged tool life Of late the development of TiCN cermets having a good combination of hardness and toughness is being focussed on The effects of TiN nano TiB2 and TiN nano TiB2 additions on TiCN Co WC Cr3C2 based cermets prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering SPS are compared in the present study The variation effect of WC as secondary carbide in a TiCN Co Cr3C2 TiB2 based cermet is studied The variation effect of Co in a TiCN WC Cr3C2 TiB2 based cermet is also studied The sizes of the starting powders used were analyzed using a Malvern particle size analyser The different powders were mixed in different compositions and ball milling operation was performed using WC Co balls at a rotational speed of 240 rpm in an acetone bath for a time duration of 24 h The slurries were then dried for 2 h in a hot air oven. newline
