Abstract

Giani Gian Singh was one of the foremost early writers who has not only written Sikh history in details but also explained various aspects of Sikhism which have gone a long way in influencing the contemporary Sikh society. He was an eye witness to the rise and fall of Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his successors. Giani Gian Singh s writing Sri Guru Panth Parkash was the first to delineate the account of the Sikhs, right from the birth of Guru Nanak Dev to the last decade of the nineteenth century. This book was completed in 1867 and got published in 1880. He himself wrote that the basis of this granth is the books of Ratan Singh and Bute Shah and many stories narrated by alive old people. He wrote this book in Brij, explaining the life of ten gurus, various sacrifices made by Sikhs, Dal Khalsa, Sikh Misals and Sikh Sects. He was closely associated with a number of Sikh Chieftains and rulers, but his writings do not acknowledge directly or indirectly their influence nor his own beliefs as a Nirmala saint. newline
