Abstract: In machining process it is vital to locate and constrain the workpiece with respect to machine tool in order to achieve effective machining Fixtures are used to securely locate and support the workpiece in order to impart accuracy reliability and interchangeability The quality of the machining is ensured by properly designing Workpiece Fixture System WFS by minimizing elastic deformation of the workpiece during machiningThe elastic deformation of the workpiece affects the form and dimensional accuracy The machines with high accuracy could not impart closer tolerance to the components due to the elastic deformation of the workpiece Hence it needs a systematic study and analysis to predict the deformation and optimize the same The WFS consists of workpiece and fixture arrangement for performing machining operation in case of batch or mass production The positioning of locators and clamps around the workpiece to perform effective machining under the influence of machining forces are known as Fixture Layout Design FLD The suitably designed FLD will facilitate to constrain the workpiece against cutting forces to impart dimensional and form accuracy to the workpiece by minimizing elastic deformation Selection of optimum position of locators and clamps are the key factors in FLD The optimization of FLD in WFS is imperative since it is required to impart quality to the machining component and minimize the cost of manufacturing. newline
