Portrait of the writer as woman A study of creativity and sexuality in womens fiction

Abstract

The study is an attempt to find out how sexuality and creativity are newlineinterrelated in women s fiction with female protagonists enacting their double newlineroles as woman and as writer. The study shows the difference in authors newlineattitudes with regard to female sexuality and female creativity discussed from newlinefemale perspective. The novels chosen for the study are the Anglo-American newlinewriter Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar (1963), the Canadian writer Margaret newlineLaurence s The Diviners (1974), the Latina writer Julia Alvarez s Saving the newlineWorld: A Novel (2006), the Japanese-American writer Ruth Ozeki s A Tale for newlinethe Time Being (2013) and the Indian Dalit writer Meena Kandasamy s When I newlineHit You Or, a Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife (2017). In all these newlinenovels, the female protagonists are writers suffering from socio-cultural newlinerestrictions and psychic disorders like writer s block or hypergraphia or both, newlineimpending in their creativity. newline
