Abstract: Most of the infectious diseases are caused by bacteria and fungi. Infections caused newlineby bacteria can be prevented, managed and treated through an anti-bacterial group of newlinecompounds known as antibiotics. Antibiotics can be roughly defined as the variety of newlinesubstances derived from bacterial sources (microorganisms) that control the growth of or newlinekill other bacteria. Antibiotics are one of the most commonly used drugs and they have been newlinecalled the single most important therapeutic discovery in the history of medicine. Several newlinenaturally occurring compounds with antibiotic activity also have potent antitumor activity, newlineand they were developed as anticancer agents. After the discovery of antibiotics, clinicians newlineobserved unusual microbial colonization and disease symptoms during antibiotic therapy. newlineThe possibility of fungi to cause disease in humans has slowly became apparent. Antifungals newlineare the drugs used to kill or prevent further growth of fungi. They kill off the fungal organism newlinewithout dangerous effects on the host. However, the effectiveness of drugs and easy access newlinehave also led to their overuse and prompting bacteria and fungi to develop resistance. The newlinedrug discovery program has become a multidisciplinary approach to discover novel drug newlinemolecules. Ithas played an important role in the development of newer and safer drugs. newlineMany antibiotics and antifungal drugs develop resistance towards most of the newlinepathogens, each of them still exhibits confines such as the spectrum of activity, side effects, resistance, drug-drug interactions. Growing emergence of drug resistance became a major concern to public health and scientific communities worldwide , especially in the field of newlinemultidrug-resistant organisms so that there is an urgent need for the development of new, newlinemore effective, less toxic and safe drugs with novel mechanisms of action as well as newlinestructural modifications. newline newline newline
