Abstract: Plasma is a special state of matter consisting of ionized particles along with neutral particles. Such a state is identified as prevailing in gaseous form which is very hot. The electrons are stripped off from atoms to form a gas of negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions. The solar system and the bulk of the universe comprise matter which is mostly in the form of plasma. The charged particles in plasma respond to both static and dynamic electromagnetic fields and show oscillatory character. In a fully thermalized, equilibrium state, these electrons and ions can oscillate about their equilibrium positions. However, any perturbation to this equilibrium can displace the charged particles in such a way as to set up electric and magnetic fields which act as restoring forces to the displaced particles. In the simplest example of such a perturbation, the electrons happen to be far off from the less mobile ions (because of the mass difference). The electrons thus become the sources of simple harmonic oscillations about the equilibrium positions. newlineThe formation and propagation of plasma waves depend on various parameters of plasmas and their study involves the measurement of the characteristics frequencies of the charged particles. Researchers try to understand the basic properties of the plasma such as its density and the effect of the magnetic field which may be threading the plasma. In many cases, plasma waves and instabilities are important in understanding the state of the plasma, the evolution of energy and the flux of plasma in magnetized plasma, and a number of other interesting phenomena. newlineThe nonlinearity of plasma waves is one of the most inherent features to be known in plasmas.
