Education is a designed process of human enlightenment. It is an empowering agent in a highly competitive and dynamic socio- economic global environment to achieve the better quality of life. In fact, education is essential to every type of individual as well as societal growth. It is the key that can open every lock and solve every problem. It is the mirror of the society which reflects its strengths, weaknesses, hopes, biases and culture (Kirk and Gallagher 1983). Thus, education is pillar of civilized society as it plays a vital role in maintaining social order, improving the living standards of the people and safeguarding human dignity. It is the single most important factor which shapes the personality, builds the character, moulds the habits and upgrades the knowledge of an individual. It prepares a person for social life and imparts him such knowledge and skills as would enable him to meet the challenges of daily life. Education is not only knowledge or information but an attitude and a way of life. It is bringing out man s manliness and making him realize his responsibility towards mankind. newline newlineOur scriptures tell us how education makes a person free, ethical, just and socially useful. Vidiya Veechari Ta Parupkari (when one reflects over education, he becomes a benefactor of others) says Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Education humanizes humanity and makes life progressive, cultured and civilized. It is through education that man develops his thinking and reasoning, problem solving ability and creativity, intelligence and aptitude, positive sentiments and skills, good values and attitudes. Development of the nation is primarily dependent on the education system available in the country. Education is the vehicle for and indicator of development (UNESCO, 2001). The very aim of education is to impart knowledge, skills and attitudes, which are required by the children to become useful members of their respective societies (Pandey 1996). newline newline
