The petroleum industry is a major contributor to India s Gross newlineDomestic Product, although the contribution comes at the cost of risks newlineinvolved . The inability to meet the increasing demand for crude has led to newlinefresh efforts towards new exploration activities. However, according to the newline2017-18 report presented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas of newlineIndia, the construction of exploratory wells is adversely affected by various newlinedisruptive events which lead to delays or, at times, may lead to acquittal and newlineabandonment of the drilling process. These delays extend the Process newlineCompletion Time, increases the cost incurred, and resource utilisation. newlineTherefore, the drilling industry needs to be vigilant of these disruptive events newlineto ensure a smooth and disruption free drilling completion. This study which intends to reduce the process disruption risk in exploratory drilling process was carried out in two phases. The first phase newlineinvolves the identification, categorisation, assessment and analysis of risks. A newlineMultitude of risks that could potentially lead to drilling process disruption newlinewas identified through literature survey and discussions with industrial newlineexperts. From the discussion sixteen risk factors that pose the Drilling Process newlineDisruption Risks (DPDR) were shortlisted. These factors were categorized newlineunder three major categories, namely, Risk Inducers, Risk Catalysers and newlineRisk Catalyst Poison based on the interaction amidst each other and with the newlineprocess. The sixteen sub-major categories or the Drilling Process Disruption newlineRisk Factors (DPDRFs) were further decomposed using Risk Breakdown newlineStructure (RBS) approach. The RBS provides a hierarchical tree structure of newlinethe risk factors with clear visibility and clarity of risk events and newline newline
