dc.description.abstract | Power Quality PQ is identified as a major reason for enhancing system efficiency reducing various losses, ensuring production quality minimizing disturbance to nearby connected loads and safe operation of the equipment The PQ problem is defined as any deviation from the pure sinusoidal voltage or current at the fundamental frequency with the rated magnitude Generation transmission and distribution system are the three major divisions of a typical power system The secondary power distribution system is configured either as a Three Phase Three Wire 3P3W or a Three Phase Four Wire 3P4W system The proliferation of nonlinear loads has increased the various PQ problems such as current harmonics load unbalancing reactive power burden excessive neutral current voltage harmonics and voltage unbalance in the power distribution system The nonlinear loads create poor power factor, overheating of a distribution transformer and interference to the communication system newlinePQ problems are also aggravated by interfacing Distributed Generation DG due to the direct injection of non-steady power from renewable energy sources It leads PQ to take a new dimension in the modern distribution system. On the other hand, advances in the digitized electronics communications and process control automation have been expanding the number of sensitive loads which demands quality power for their proper operation PQ standard IEEE 519 2014 provide the guidelines for an acceptable level of voltage distortion on the utility system and end-user injection level of current harmonics at the Point of Common Coupling PCC Hence both end-users and utilities share the responsibilities to enhance the power quality When the Total Harmonic Distortion THD exceeds the recommended limits newline newline | |
