Wireless Sensor Network is a collection of wireless sensor nodes newlineorganized into a cooperative network Typically sensor nodes are battery newlinepowered In most of the sensor network applications it is either not possible newlineor not desirable to replace or recharge the batteries while the sensor networks newlineare deployed in hazardous conditions So energy conservation in a wireless newlinesensor node is required to prolong the life of wireless sensor networks This newlinethesis work reports the empirical and simulation studies of low power newlinemedium access control protocols for wireless sensor networks In this newlineresearch work energy conservation has been done by exploiting the newlineprogrammable transmission power control and the programmable channel newlineselection features of modern RF transceivers A wireless sensor network newlinetestbed has been made and a framework for the empirical energy newlinemeasurement in wireless sensor network has been made to measure the newlineenergy consumption during hardware implementation Transmission Power newlineControl Techniques Optimal Power Control with Overhearing Avoidance newlineOPCOA and Adaptive Power Control with Overhearing Avoidance newlineAPCOA have been proposed and the hardware implementation of these newlineprotocols has been done A dedicated control channel based multi channel newlineMAC has been proposed for wireless sensor networks and the hardware newlineimplementation has been done A duty cycled multi channel MAC has been newlineproposed to retain the throughput and latency performance even for low duty newlinecycle conditions newline newlineen_US
