The work of the present thesis comes under the part of interesting area of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry. Crystal engineering is a branch of science deals with the construction of functional architectures with specific designs of various organic-inorganic hybrid materials. The main goal of construction of supramolecular structures is the understanding of intermolecular interactions responsible for developing such expandable materials. The non-covalent interactions in organic materials and the coordinate bonds in inorganic materials play a crucial role in deciding structures by the formation of supramolecular frameworks. Though several organic molecules have been reported still there is a need to understand the non-covalent interactions in solid state for getting the real time applications. Designing such molecules to interlink in metal-organic materials where organic molecules acts as linkers and metals acts as nodes further provides novel networks with desirable applications. For these purpose, exobidentate bis-pyridyl-diimine Schiff base ligands has been selected in this thesis. To understand the non-covalent interactions and structure-property relationship the photophysical studies of series of series of bis-pyridyl-diimine ligands with/without alkyl spacer were used. For the construction of coordination polymers, the pyridyl groups of the exobidentate bis-pyridyl-diimine Schiff base ligands coordinate the metals to extend the networks and the imine functions are expected to provide interesting applications. Further in order to enhance the dimensionality, rigidity or flexibility and porosity of the frameworks for desirable applications, dicarboxylates or disulfonate based ligands also used along with bis-pyridyl-diimine ligands to construct coordination polymers in this thesis. The aim of the present thesis is the construction of supramolecular coordination networks into higher dimensional networks of multi functional bis-pyridyl-diimine linkers along with dicarboxylates and disulfonate moie
