Sanitation laws and public health in India a study

Abstract

For the longest time, sanitation gained little attention from policymakers and lawyers, although it was not entirely outside the purview of laws and policies in India. However, the past couple of decades have seen a significant difference in the manner in which sanitation is catered to, both at the national and international levels. While this change is coexisting with an increasing interest among academics and practitioners in the policy perspectives on sanitation, the stress on its legal dimensions has lagged behind significantly. The piecemeal nature of the newlineprevalent legal instruments having a bearing on sanitation and the absence of awareness about these instruments has further assisted in this knowledge deficit. newlineThis study tries to fill this gap by newlinepiecing together the supplies of the existing legal instruments that attempt to address the various dimensions of sanitation in India. In the process, it features, to researchers, policy-makers, newlinelawyers and other people concerned about sanitation, the prominence, complexity and fragmented nature of the legal and policy frameworks that inform the sector.
