Abstract: | Plant growth and developmental processes are regulated by light quality, quantity, and photoperiod. Together these three parameters strongly influence traits of horticultural newlineinterest, including plant stature, growth habits, the transition to flowering, and end point plant productivity. Specifically, changes in light quality strongly affect several newlineplant anatomical, physiological, morphological, and biochemical parameters. Red and blue lights have the greatest impact on plant growth because they are the major energy newlinesources for photosynthetic CO 2 assimilation in plants. This study aimed to evaluate the growth, photosynthetic and antioxidative activities in leaves and roots of pea (Pisum sativum) seedlings growing under different light spectra (white, blue and red LED) on different day intervals. Plant height was higher under blue LED than under red LED and control lighting conditions, the root and leaf dry mass of plants under the blue LED were higher than those under red LED and control conditions, indicating that red light plays an important role in promoting elongation of the plant stem and dry matter accumulation. The plants grown under blue light showed higher contents newlineof bioactive compounds, compared with the plants under other light treatments. The newlineresults indicate that the blue LED treatment is the most helpful to enhance the photoreaction rate in the PSII reaction center, which in turn increases the electron transfer ability of the PSII. |
