Abstract: | Back ground and Objectives: Literature study revealed that the incidence of gastric ulcers may be less in South Asian peoples due to their life styles or the different categories of food consumption by them. newlineOut of such foods the Raphinus sativus Linn. (Cruciferae), Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringacea) and Amaranthus tricolor Linn. (Amaranthaceae) which are widely cultivated and consumed, have been reported for having number of medicinal properties. However limited reports newlineavailable to show their effect on gastric ulcers; this is the base for selecting these plants. The core objectives of this work comprised to assess the outcome of various leaf extracts of Raphinus sativus, newlineMoringa oleifera and Amaranthus tricolor on gastric and duodenal ulcers in rats, followed by the isolation of phytoconstituents from the leaf extracts having potent anti-ulcer activity. newlineMethods: The effect of different leaf fractions of Raphinus sativus, newlineMoringa oleifera and Amaranthus tricolor on stomachic and duodenal ulcers were assessed by employing various experimental models such as acetic acid induced, pylorus ligation induced, ethanol, indomethacin, newlineischemia-reperfusion induced gastric ulcers and cysteamine induced duodenal ulcers. The common parameter determined was ulcer index. The leaf fractions with potent antiulcer activity were subjected for isolating the phytoconstituents by employing various chromatographic newlinetechniques, further followed by characterization of the isolated newlinecomponents by employing different spectral techniques like UV, IR, NMR and Mass spectroscopy. The isolated compounds were assessed for in-vitro H+-K+-ATPase inhibition activity and for in-vitro antioxidant activity. Apart from this, an attempt was made to formulate a polyherbal formulation containing the ethyl acetate leaf fractions of R.sativus, M.oleifera and A.tricolor at a ratio of 1:1:1 and evaluate its antiulcer activity using different gastric ulcer models in rats. newline |
